Expect to start seeing SAF being offered at more FBOs at major airports, as the largest pipeline to serve many parts of the Southern U.S. and Atlantic Coast brings sustainable aviation fuel online.
Multiple reports say the Colonial Pipeline fuel network will soon begin shipping SAF.
According to information published by Argus Media and others, Colonial delivers aviation fuel directly to Atlanta (ATL) and Dulles International Airport near Washington, D.C. (IAD), as well as five other airports in Tennessee, North Carolina and Maryland. Further down the pipeline food chain, another eight metro airports in the region indirectly get their fuel through Colonial.
“Colonial Pipeline is excited to provide this new service to meet our customers’ evolving need for renewable fuels,” said Aaron Smith, Colonial business development manager, in a statement.
Colonial originally announced the coming change back in January, in a notice to shippers – that existing aviation kerosene grade 54 fuel would be modified to allow for blends of SAF up to 50% while the second would be the addition of a new product specification, labeling SAF produced from hydroprocessing esters and fatty acids (HEFA), labeled as Grade 50.
GlobalAir.com added the ability for FBOs in the United States last year to report SAF fuel prices. As of the publication of this article, the average national price for SAF is $7.98, based on reports from FBOs in the Southern, Western Pacific and Northwest Mountain regions of the United States.
