President Joe Biden has renewed his push to offer tax credits to the aviation industry to use Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) alternatives in remarks given Tuesday at a biofuel processing plant in Menlo, Iowa.
SAF was recognized by the President as a vital component of aviation for reaching its goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
I’ve set a goal of zero-carbon for the aviation sector, for example, 2050,” said President Biden. “It’s going to require billions of gallons of sustainable aviation fuel. And you simply can’t get to net zero by 2050 without biofuels.”
The proposed sustainable aviation fuel tax credits would mean “advanced, cleaner and more sustainable fuels for American aviation.”
This push builds on the White House’s SAF Grand Challenge released in 2021 to increase the production SAF to at least 3 billion gallons per year by 2030. A proposed Sustainable Aviation Fuel tax credit to scale domestic production of the biofuel has been part of the Build Back Better Agenda, but Congress has been reluctant to move forward.
National Air Transportation Association (NATA) President and CEO Timothy Obitts commended the President for his push for a more sustainable future.
“Business aviation has consistently signaled its commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions. President Biden’s remarks validate our efforts and confirm the collective voice of the industry is being heard at the highest levels,” said Obitts. “The NATA thanks the Administration for its dedication and calls on Congress to act swiftly on legislation that creates a dedicated SAF Blenders Tax Credit – the next step in providing much-needed and much-anticipated sustainable fuel to our industry.”
