New backcountry landing gear with Black Ops suspension system available
Kitfox Aircraft and Acme Aerofab partnered to offer a new landing gear system for rugged, reliable backcountry aircraft.
The Black Ops suspension system allows the Kitfox main landing gear to maneuver smoothly over rough terrain, increasing control during backcountry flying. The suspension upgrade improves quality across the Kitfox line of experimental and light sport planes. The system was originally approved for Piper Aircraft and CubCrafters aircraft. It allows the main landing gear to adjust readily for rougher terrain, making the aircraft easier to control during backcountry operations and improving both passenger and pilot comfort.
The Black Ops system is a direct bolt on replacement for most bungee applications. It consists of two internally sprung dampers to suspend the aircraft. The system contains a separated air-over-oil design and a tuned damping piston to control the oscillations of the spring during the taxi, takeoff and landing phases. The system’s sprung dampening system separates the spring medium from the dampening components and results in a loss of nitrogen pressure in the damping system that will not make the system sag or lose ride height. Losing nitrogen or damping oil will not prevent the system from flying, unlike other systems.
“We are excited to offer the Acme Black Ops shocks as standard for the Kitfox STi,” Kitfox CEO John McBean said to Kit Planes. “The more positive feel and ride height coupled with the safety and testing required for the STC makes a shock that is an excellent fit for the back country and the Kitfox Aircraft models.”
The new Black Ops system is a replacement for the existing Kitfox Cabane V gear and now the standard system for the Kitfox S7 STi and optional for the Series 5, 6 and 7 Super Sport models. Kitfox is currently working on a new version to retrofit to the earlier Kitfox Model 4.
The system features a 6061 aircraft grade aluminum shock body, hybrid stainless steel shaft construction, stainless steel and aluminum internal components and anodized aluminum parts for added corrosion resistance. The total system weighs 14 lbs and it has a limited lifetime warranty. The Black Ops system was tested to endure 5,500 lbs in compression and 22,000 lbs in straight-line pull.
The system was made in the U.S. by Veterans from U.S.-sourced materials. The upgrade for the Kitfox Series 5, 6 and 7 models is $3,430 and it is an upgrade option on the new Kitfoxes and standard on the S7 STi.
