Tesla on autopilot crashes into Cirrus Vision Jet

A video circulating Reddit captured the moment a Tesla crashed into a Cirrus Vision Jet parked on an airport tarmac. The Tesla was driverless, and reports from the video suggest the Tesla Model Y was operating on its “Smart Summon” feature.

The video shows the Tesla Model Y creeping towards the jet before colliding with the tail section and spinning the aircraft 180 degrees.

“I was at a Cirrus event and someone tried to summon their Tesla past a $3,500,000 Vision Jet…” the caption of the post reads.

Reddit users reported that the incident occurred at Felts Field (SFF) in Spokane Washington.

Smart Summon is a relatively new feature in Tesla’s Full Self-Driving suite, which gives owners the ability to bring their car to their location using their smartphone. According to the owner’s manual, the function should only work if the user’s smartphone is within 19 feet of the vehicle.

While the Tesla should have used external cameras to identify its surroundings and avoid any hazards, some Reddit users speculate that the cameras may not have detected the aircraft because its tail was too high for the car to “see.”

The manufacturer recommends that the Smart Summon feature is only used when the vehicle is no more than 200 feet away from the user and within eyesight.

It is not immediately clear how much damage the Tesla or Cirrus Vision Jet sustained.
