Spotify users report huge spike in outages as Taylor Swift’s new album Midnight drops | Science & Tech News
Spotify users reported a huge spike in outages as Taylor Swift’s new album landed on the platform this morning.
Midnights released at 5am UK time, and coincided exactly with a sizeable jump in issues on the streaming service, according to Downdetector.
Almost 8,000 users logged problems with the app in the moments around the album’s launch.
Fans also tweeted about struggling to use Spotify as the new songs dropped.
Other major new albums may have also contributed to the demand, with Carly Rae Jepsen’s The Loneliest Time and Arctic Monkeys’ The Car also releasing this morning.
Spotify has shaken off the difficulties, and the app is working as normal.
Sky News has contacted Spotify for comment about the reported outages.
Midnights is Swift‘s 10th studio album, which the 32-year-old says tells the stories of “13 sleepless nights” from throughout her life.
Its release comes after a surprise announcement at the end of August, and is her first new release in two years.
Spotify perhaps should have known there would be trouble, given previous demand for the pop star’s work.
Swift’s last album, the 2021 re-recording Red (Taylor’s Version), broke the platform’s record for the most-streamed album in a day by a female artist – with more than 90 million plays.
The previous record was also held by Swift, for 2020’s folklore.
She also holds Spotify’s record for the most-streamed female artist in a day, with just shy of 123 million, and was the most popular woman on the platform in 2021.
